HGV Safety Equipment

Our GPS tracking capabilities assist in HGV safety and security, with trackers, software and sensors that calculate mileage and expenses, report on driver behaviour, detect objects in blind spots, and more.

From October 2024 there will be an update to the Driver Vision Standards released by Transport for London in regards to HGV Safety and permits in London. We supply vehicle CCTV systems (DVRs & 360° cameras) and the other equipment listed below, including the new Moving Off Information System (MOIS) and the Blind-Spot Information System (BSIS) – to ensure that you can operate at the highest standards of safety.

Transport for London

The Direct Vision Standard measures how much an HGV driver can see directly through their cab windows. This indicates the level of risk to vulnerable road users, such as people walking or cycling near the vehicle.

Whether or not the operator considers the vehicle to meet the standards, all lorries over 12 tonnes (GVW) entering or operating in the Greater London area need to hold a valid HGV safety permit before using the area.

The HGV safety permit scheme covers most of Greater London and is in operation 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

If your vehicle does not meet the minimum DVS star rating after 28 October, you will need to make your vehicle safer by fitting it with Safe System improvements, or you may receive a penalty charge notice (PCN) of up to £550 (reduced to £275 if paid within 14 days).

Blind-Spot Information System (BSIS)

The BSIS system (also known as the BSD – Blind Spot Detection system) is designed to prevent accidents occurring with pedestrians or other road users that may be approaching the vehicle from the near side. This is similar to the side scan system, however it will not give false alerts by scanning stationary “road furniture” such as lamp posts or traffic lights. The system is active when stationary, at low speeds, and when the vehicle is indicating left. It uses a triangular LED indicator situated on the dash, which glows red to alert the driver that someone is in the blind spot area.

Moving Off Information System (MOIS)

The MOIS system is designed to prevent accidents occurring with pedestrians, cyclists and other road users that may be present when the vehicle begins to move off from a stationary position. The system is not active when the vehicle is stationary, or the handbrake is engaged. It uses and small screen situated on the dash, which counts down from 2 meters as other road users get closer to the vehicle as it is about to move off. The system is not active when the vehicle is moving at high speed.

The FORS Standard

The Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) is a voluntary accreditation scheme for fleet operators, which aims to raise the level of quality within fleet operations, and to recognise which operators are achieving exemplary levels of best practice in safety, efficiency, and environmental protection. The FORS Standard requires a range of blind-spot minimisation and audible warning equipment to be fitted to vehicles, to help prevent accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians. Trackit247 has a variety of options to help you towards achieving the FORS status.

We have used trackit247 for 8-9 years, with great service and back up. In the last 6 months we have installed 4 camera systems to our vehicles from Trackit247, and again the service is great. These systems are used to aid the drives to back down narrow lanes and spaces, and have reduced the claims […]
